Men’s Club Basketball Rules 2007-2008
Let's
all keep in mind that ours is a fun and friendly league first and foremost, but
we also want it to be a competitive and popular league that is around long
after everyone reading this has hung-up their gym shoes for good. With this in mind, here are some basic rules
and regulations governing our league:
Eligibility
All Men’s Club members in good
standing, age 25 or older (excluding some under 25 who were grandfathered in),
and with dues-paid current are eligible to play.
Drafting Teams
Captains will draft teams using the
wrap-around method and based upon a random drawing for draft order. Once each team has an equal number of
players, and the number of remaining players to be drafted would not constitute
a full “round” in the draft, all captains will draw numbers and draft the
remaining players in order of the lowest to highest numbers drawn. For example, assume there are 8 teams
drafting 74 players: once the 8th captain drafts the 70th player, all captains
will again draw numbers, and the lowest 4 numbers will draft the remaining 4
players, the lowest number drawing first.
Adding Players after the Draft
If there are Men’s Club members who
request to play after the draft has been completed, the committee will determine
which teams these players will get assigned to based upon a best-efforts
attempt to keep or improve parity among the teams.
Forfeit
·
Teams
will need a minimum of 3 roster players to play an official game, and will not
be allowed to use non-roster players in official games.
·
Players
shall make every effort to be on time to games; if a team isn’t ready to play
within 10 minutes of the scheduled start time, that team will forfeit the game.
·
First
forfeit will result in team probation.
Second forfeit will result in automatic exclusion from playoffs.
General Rules
·
The 2 teams listed 1st on the schedule for the indicated
time slot will play on the west court; the 2 teams listed 2nd on the
schedule for the indicated time slot will play on the east court
·
Each
game will be 2 halves of 24 minutes, and there will be a continuously running
clock.
·
Each
basket is 1 point, and there are no 3-point shots.
·
Teams
have to win by 2 points. If a game ends
in a tie, the OT starts with both teams tied 0-0. However, if a team is ahead by one point at
the end of regulation, the score at the beginning of OT is 1-0 in favor of the
team who was winning at the end of regulation.
A coin-toss will decide who gets the ball first in OT, regardless of the
score, and the winner in OT is the first team to go
ahead by 2 baskets OR to reach 5
points.
Playing Time
Team chemistry has always been a hallmark of past
championship teams, and one way to achieve the highest degree of team chemistry
is to make sure that everyone plays about the same amount of minutes each
game. In general:
·
Captains
will make every effort to ensure that every player plays an approximately equal
amount of time as all other players in attendance.
·
However,
Captains can exercise discretion when it comes to players with poor attendance.
·
In
short, don’t wait for your captain or someone else to ask you to sub; mind your
minutes and pull yourself out once in a while.
Playoffs
·
Only
the top 8 teams (of 10) will qualify for playoffs based upon results of regular
season records.
·
If
2 teams have same W/L percentage, higher seeding will go to winner of
head-to-head match-up(s) during season.
If that doesn’t decide it, a coin toss will be used.
Aggressive Play:
Our league is a friendly league, but it’s also a competitive league. Always remember that most everyone has to get
up and go to work the next day. And
anyone who initiates a physical altercation (i.e. fist-fight) will be ejected
from the league.
Fouls: Because we don’t
have refs, this is always a tricky issue.
In short, the foul-ee calls the foul, but there is nothing more noble in
pick-up basketball than an honest foul-er who admits it first. On the other hand, nothing detracts more from
a good league than a bunch of petty foul calls.
In general, as long as it’s not flagrant, doesn’t impede your play, or
doesn't affect your shot, do your best to ignore the incidental contact that
will inevitably occur in our games.
The 3-Second Rule:
By definition, should be pretty self-explanatory. But to you big guys in particular who like to
camp down low, for a lot of our shorter guys their lay-ups are the only shots
they have left. Move out of there once
in a while, i.e. at least every 3 seconds.
Ball-hogs/Chuckers:
In addition to everyone getting equal time, it would be great if
everyone could get an equal amount of shots.
Ridiculous, sure, but great.
Point is, for most guys this is the only basketball they’ll play all
year, and no one likes to play with a ball-hog.

best to stop in to patronize Quigley’s after your games, even if for just a few
minutes and a few soft drinks.
