Welcome to Sports Night 2007!
On behalf of the St. Catherine’s Men’s Club, the Sports Night Committee, and our entire parish community, thank you for joining us for our 24th annual Sports Night.
For those of you who may be new to the event, Sports Night is the Men’s Club biggest event of the year and our primary fund-raiser. The funds we raise tonight will be used to support the Athletic Association, the school, and the many charities and organizations that we have supported over the years. Last year we raised an all-time record high of almost $75,000, bringing the total amount raised since 1983 to over $425,000
As in past years Sports Night would not be the success it is without the contributions of many individuals, and after more than 20 years of doing this there are truly almost too many to mention. You’ll find the names of the Sports Night committee members in the beginning of this Program booklet, they being the primary drivers of the success of the event.
That said, tonight we are honoring Phil Griffin as our Men’s Club Man of the Year:
Space here doesn’t allow me to go into detail about Phil’s level of involvement in St. Catherine’s over the years, so I’ll do my best to do so when we present him with the award this evening.
We hope you enjoy yourselves and that you take the utmost precaution in your return trip home. If you find that you or any of your guests are in need of transportation at the end of the evening please let us know.

- 1983 American League Rookie of the Year. Also named to the All-Rookie team.
- Holds the record for most roof top home runs at Old Comiskey Park, seven. Nobody else has more than four. Named A.L. Player of the Week three times in 1984 (4/29), 1985 (9/15), and 1989 (5/14).
- Led 1983 division champion club in home runs (35) and runs batted in (100). Also led the 1984 club with 32 home runs.
- Hit 12 home runs and drove in 30 runs in September, 1985.
- The sole member of the White Sox named to the American League's 1983 all-star team, the last hosted at Old Comiskey Park.
- 35 home runs as a rookie is the franchise record, two short of the major league record. Nobody else on the Sox has hit more than 26 in their first season.
- 140 career home runs is still sixth-best in franchise history.
- Traded to the Yankees in 1986. Returned as a free agent in 1989, but traded again (this time to Baltimore) in 1990.
- Still hugely popular amongst Sox fans through his continued involvement in the Chicago community, and more recent appointment as manager to the Schaumburg Flyers minor league baseball team.
- The construction worker, scouted by Sox great Billy Pierce, signed to a Sox contract by Bill Veeck, the surprise player to lead the Sox offense on the Winnin' Ugly championship team, the local kid living the dream of every south side Sox fan's childhood, the Kid from Gary, "Kitty", Ron Kittle.
