Game 8
Recaps
Lawn Manor North: Walton 21, McGovern 5
In a game with a score more reminiscent of
week 1 than week 8, it was all Walton, all the time. Jim McGovern must have foreseen this
ass-whuppin’ long in advance as he was on a fishing trip in the farthest
reaches of remote Canada. Only entertaining thing to report was Walton’s
Ed Arquilla and McGovern’s John Rolence exchanging homers over each other’s
heads. In an effort to break the 1-to-1
homer tie, Arquilla swung out of his shoes his next at-bat, popped up an easy
can-of-corn to Rolence, who proceeded to stumble, bumble, and bobble the ball
all the way back to the infield, giving Arquilla a stand-up double.
Lawn Manor South: Neylon 12, Phelan 11
A see-saw game with good and
timely hitting from both sides and Team Neylon finally got off the snide. Frank Lonergan, Tom Cunningham, Tim Loughney,
and Tim “Duck-snort” Murphy were the deadly hitters for Neylon, while Dom
McAvoy and Brian Condon lead the way for Phelan. Chris “The mouth that roars” Naujokas made a
running (in gym shoes), inning-ending forearm catch in the 1st that stole
a few runs from Phelan. Other than that
details were thin since there wasn’t a score book, forcing Neylon and Phelan to
share the back-side of a Coors Light box.
The game was also hampered by the lack of practice balls, as the LMS equipment
bin was apparently hit by Hurricane Katrina, leaving 9 of the 14 balls
water-logged, and no safety-base. Shared
Web-gem nomination - and a hale
and hearty %#!*-you to McGovern’s
Mike Mehalek and Terry Corcoran for stealing 3 of the remaining 5 good balls,
as they apparently had equipment issues of their own at LMN.
PIE Southeast: Krokos 6, Hughes 0
Krokos started the game without new ace pitcher Bob
Kelleher, who came off the bench to shut out McGovern in week 7. George "I promise not to miss again"
Lefils re-assumed his starter role and picked up where Kelleher left off,
giving team Krokos improbable back-to-back shutouts.
In a game noteworthy for its defense (if not boredom),
Krokos CF Brian Donegan nailed Hughes’ Jim Burke at the plate with a laser
throw that broke catcher Mike Cummings’ finger.
But Cummings held onto the ball, ending the inning, and thus cut short a
Hughes scoring threat. Hughes’ John “Is
there a prize for lowest ERA if we don’t make the playoffs?” Sanchez pitched
another great game in this losing effort, and he got great defense form SC Jack
Maguire and 3B Ralph “I’m back after 5 weeks” Soch. Tony Krokos blasted a 2-run triple into the
gap in left-center, but did not violate the “John Roche Proviso” since Kevin
Hughes reported the hit (under suspicious circumstances smelling of collusion
to shamelessly self-promote).
Mike Shannon umped a tremendous game, and Mike
Cummings gets the Web-gem nomination for his sacrifice of life-and-limb to secure
the victory. Unsure of his team’s standings
as far as the playoffs go (Note: teetering, at best), Captain Kevin Hughes lit
into his team in a post-game rant that Ozzie Guillen would have envied.
PIE Southwest: Kelly 10, Moss 9
In a
game that started 8 vs. 8, team Kelly continued down the glorious road to that
elusive goal, perfection. Moss did pick
up a 9th player later on, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the
speedy Kelly, who was hampered (or arguably helped) by the absence of every
player weighing more than 225 lbs.
Moss’
veterans jumped out early with a 7-run, 1st inning salvo, but the
Viagra soon wore off and Kelly's youthful stamina – and perhaps, again, the
sweet Lord Baby Jesus – helped them squeeze out yet another come-from-behind, 7th
inning win. Kelly had strong hitting
from Frank Finnegan, Rick Leonard, and Demetrio Arroyo, and Finnegan made an
awesome, Web-gem nomination, sliding catch on the foul line. The game turned on Moss’ 2 errors in the 7th
followed by a game-winning sacrifice fly from Kelly’s Kevin Connors.
Team
Phelan awaits, standing steadfastly in the way of Kelly’s shot at perfection...
PIE Northwest: Cisko
8, Carberry 7 {No report}
PIE Northeast: Schumacher 19, Roche 4
A Schumacher barrage in the 1st inning buried
Roche in an 8-run hole and they never recovered. The entire Schumacher squad contributed to
the hit-parade, lead by Pat Hynes, Dan Omiecinski, and Mo "Moon Shot"
O'Connor. Nobody really stood out for
Roche, other than Pat Black who was the picture of sartorial splendor in
chamois khaki pants ($95.99, Abercrombie & Fitch), sea-foam green Mount
Tamalpais polo shirt ($60, Gramicci), and D&G Nico wristwatch ($109.99,
Dolce & Gabbana).
Roche did get a homer from Al Zaleski, but Schumacher P Mark
Kosiek tightened his bandana and applied the tourniquet, completely shutting the
Yellow swarm down after that. Schumacher’s
Jim Nelson was again stellar at SS, but a game-long Web-gem nomination goes
to Matt "Flawless" Flaws for his patrolling LF like a Swift Boat captain
in Da Nang. Although it was tough to tell if Matt was
really that fast or if it was just the comparison to Roche’s Jim Gannon, who
patrolled LF like a fully armed aircraft carrier.
Week
8 Web-gem Winner
Krokos’ Mike Cummings for his finger-breakin’ put-out at home.
